Demetrious Johnson Makes His BJJ Black Belt Debut Next Month

ONE Flyweight MMA World Champion Demetrious Johnson takes on another fresh challenge.

“Mighty Mouse” has done it all in mixed martial arts, with a staggering 12 UFC Flyweight Championships during a brilliant run in North America before taking his talents to ONE Championship in 2019.

During his tenure with the martial arts giant so far, Johnson has taken out the ONE Flyweight MMA World Grand Prix and reigned as the flyweight king starting in 2022.

But recently, the 37-year-old has focused his energy on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Incredibly, Johnson swept a field of over 30 competitors to claim the IBJJF World Masters Championship as a brown belt in 2023.

He followed up earlier this year by taking out the top prize in the Master 2 plowweight division at a tournament in Florida, USA. Despite reportedly weighing around 155 pounds on the day, he also claimed silver in the open weight category.

Johnson was then promoted to the exclusive rank of BJJ black belt by coaches Bibiano Fernandes and Yan McCane last May.

Demetrious Johnson to compete at IBJJF world championship as a BJJ Black Belt

After earning his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt earlier this year, MMA legend Demetrious Johnson is set to make his competitive debut in the category.

The American superstar will compete at the 2024 IBJJF World Masters in Las Vegas, Nevada, next month, marking his first tournament as a black belt.

The news was confirmed in a post on the IBJJF Instagram page.

“Who’s ready to watch “Mighty Mouse” Demetrious Johnson in his black belt debut? He’s signed up for the 2024 World Championship. We can’t wait to watch DJ in action again,” the caption read.

Johnson gave his immediate reaction in the comments, and it’s hard to tell if he’s nervous or excited.
“Oh lord here we go,” he wrote

Johnson’s MMA future remains up in the air. In recent times, he has teased the idea of retirement by refusing to close the door on a return to the Circle.

He was last seen in action at ONE Fight Night 10 in May 2023. That night, he scored a thrilling unanimous decision victory in the blockbuster trilogy showdown with Brazilian rival Adriano Moraes.
