Here’s how Echo star Alaqua Cox defied the odds to become Marvel’s hero

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Alaqua Cox, 26, is a Native American actress who rose to fame with the role of Maya Lopez/Echo in the 2021 Marvel series “Hawkeye.” However, she is now awaiting the premiere of her own spinoff series titled “Echo” on Disney+.

The young actress prefers to keep her personal life private. Although her boyfriend’s details are unknown, on Mother’s Day 2023, Cox announced that she was expecting a baby boy with him.

Unlike most celebrities, Cox is barely active on social media. But every time she does, she makes sure to give her fans a glimpse into her work and her life beyond.

Out of a total of 46 Instagram posts, only three of them feature her boyfriend. In 2021, she posted a few photos from one of her romantic vacations with her boyfriend.

Alaqua has never revealed the identity of her fiancé but it is believed that they started dating in 2017. In December 2021, she uploaded a series of photos of herself with family and friends.

In the caption, she called him “fiancé”. It has since been speculated that they got engaged around the same time. Later in 2023, the couple welcomed a baby boy.

“I still can’t believe I gave birth to this beautiful baby boy,” Alaqua said in one of her Instagram posts.

Alaqua Cox stars as Maya Lopez/Echo, a deaf superhero, in the upcoming Marvel series “Echo.” Just like her on-screen character, Alaqua Cox is deaf in real life.

A former member of the Wisconsin School for the Deaf girls basketball and volleyball teams in 2014 and 2015, Cox is also an amputee who wears a prosthetic leg.

Details of how she became an amputee remain confidential. Despite physical challenges, Alaqua Cox has paved the way to becoming Marvel’s next superhero sensation.

How did Alaqua Cox land a role at Marvel?

A few years ago, Alaqua was working at an Amazon center with no set goal of becoming an actor. However, fate played its hand and she ended up becoming a Marvel actress.

Alaqua had no acting experience except for a high school play. Her friends spotted the casting notice for “Hawkeye,” Cox said in an interview with People.

While the casting call mentioned the need for a Native American actress and a deaf actress, Cox found herself a perfect fit and decided to audition.
