LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: “House of the Dragon” Season 2 Episode 4 aired on HBO on Sunday, July 7, 2024.

The exciting episode centered around the high-stakes Battle at Rook’s Rest. Away from the battle, another intriguing plot develops involving Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith).

Daemon is currently at Harrenhal, seeking allies for an upcoming war against King’s Landing.

However, the cursed castle of Harrenhal haunts Daemon with visions of young Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock), Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell), and now his late wife, Laena Velaryon (Nanna Blondell).

As war looms and Demon prepares to be tested on the battlefield, he must first wrestle with his emotions.

Why did Daemon see Laena Velaryon and young Rhaenyra Targaryen?

A demon was depicted as carefree, indifferent, and innocent during his journey. His unpredictable and instinctive nature was evident on many occasions, always acting in what he thought was best for himself.

At Harrenhal, he begins to face his guilt and meets people he has wronged in his life. He first sees a young Rhaenyra reproach him for shaping her destiny and who she has become.

In Episode 4, Demon dreams of killing her and wakes up with a bloody hand after she mentions that Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) trusts her more than him.

It also possibly indicates a dilemma in Daemon’s mind regarding dealing with the throne or remaining loyal to Rhaenyra. As for Laena, in Season 1, he witnessed Laena’s death while she was giving birth to their child.

He already had two daughters, and his desire for a male child may have contributed to Laena’s death during childbirth. He carries the guilt of her death, which he faces when he sees her again.

Another meaning of Laena’s presence here could be the foreshadowing of Vhagar’s actions later in the episode.

Laena was the dragon rider for Vhagar, and if she was still alive, Aemond would not have been able to claim Vhagar. In a way, Laena’s death had consequences that affected Daemon.

Demon faces an even bigger task now that Rook’s Rest has fallen to the Greens. As he seeks allies and builds his army, his mission becomes more difficult and crucial than ever.

There is another character he has wronged who may yet appear. In Season 1, Daemon killed his first wife, Lady Rhea Royce (Rachel Redford), and that act may come back to haunt him if current events unfold as they are.

According to “Fire and Blood”, Daemon will eventually find redemption later in the series when he sacrifices himself to kill Aemond and Vhagar at the Battle Above Gods Eye.

It will be a selfless act that can redeem itself, at least in Rhaenyra’s eyes. In the book, he also has a lover named Nettles who has yet to appear in the show.
