How good is Kentucky’s 2024 NBA Draft prospect?

Although the 2024 NBA Draft is still nearly 4 months away, Reed Shepard is developing into one of the top prospects in his draft class. College basketball fans will know that Shepard is a 6’3 guard who currently plays for the Kentucky Wildcats.

It may be too soon to claim that he will transform into an NBA star. After all, the transition from college-level basketball to the NBA is something that not all basketball players can do successfully. Some college phenoms never make it into the league or ‘bust’ after being drafted.

However, fans may be interested to know more about this potential rookie and how good his game is. Therefore, it is necessary to take a close look at its statistics in college.

Reed Shepard averaged 12.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.1 assists for the Kentucky Wildcats.

While it is unfair to judge a young basketball player’s value and impact on statistics alone, NBA scouts and experts are the sole basis for judging a draft prospect’s potential and ceiling. Reed Shepard is currently 19 years old and listed at 6’3. He weighs 187lbs or 85 kg.

Shepard attended the University of Kentucky and began playing for the Wildcats in June 2023. So far, he has averaged 12.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.1 assists in his freshman season. In addition, he is also averaging 1.1 blocks and an impressive 2.3 steals per game.

Going back to his high school days, Shepard attended North Laurel High School and played shooting guard. He was named the Kentucky Gatorade Player of the Year and was given the opportunity to play in the 2023 McDonald’s All-American Boys Game during his senior year of high school.

Reed Shepard finished his high school career with 3,727 points, 1,214 assists and 1,050 rebounds and committed to play college basketball for the University of Kentucky despite receiving offers from several other colleges such as Louisville and Virginia. Players who have completed at least one year of college are eligible for the draft, Reed is expected to do the same and enter the 2024 NBA Draft.

Shepard is currently projected to be a top 5 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft

Sheppard is quickly climbing the ranks and is currently considered one of the best players this year. His efficient shooting has played a big role in his current projection as a top 5 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. During his first year with the Kentucky Wildcats, Reed is shooting 54.7% from the field, 50.7% from the three-point line and 84.6% from the free throw line.

Considering his impressive shooting abilities and defense skills, it is not really surprising that he is expected to be one of the top prospects in the 2024 NBA Draft. Shepard’s good balance of playmaking and defense along with his catch-and-shoot abilities have increased his value among NBA scouts.
