what to know

Minnesota has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will have to dust off their road jerseys soon. They and the Iowa Hawkeyes will square off in a Big Ten battle on Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena at 3:00 p.m. Iowa suffered a loss in their last match and will look to turn the tables on Minnesota, coming off a win.

Although Minnesota hasn’t fared well against the Spartans lately (they were 2-8 in their previous ten matchups), they didn’t let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Golden Gophers had enough and defeated the Spartans 59-56. For those watching at home, that’s the closest Minnesota has posted since January 4th.

Cam Christie was the offensive standout of the match as he scored 19 points with six rebounds. Less helpful for Minnesota was Elijah Hawkins’ 0-5 three-point shooting.

Meanwhile, oddsmakers set the bar high, but Iowa and the Nittany Lions didn’t disappoint and went into Thursday with a 163.5 point over/under. The Hokies took an 89-79 hit in the losing column at the hands of the Nittany Lions. Iowa didn’t live up to their potential and felt shortchanged by oddsmakers who thought they were coming into the game.

Losses don’t tell the whole story though, as many players had good games. One of the most active was Owen Freeman, who scored nine points with five rebounds and two steals. Ben Crick was another key contributor, scoring 22 points with five rebounds.

The win for the Golden Gophers bumped their record to 15-7. As for the Hokies, their loss dropped their record to 13-10.

Sunday’s game is shaping up to be a shooting masterclass: Not only can Minnesota miss this season, they’ve made 47.4% of their shots per game. However, Iowa is not going to struggle in that department as they have made 48% of their shots this season. Given these competing powers, it will be interesting to see how they clash.

Minnesota came up short against the Hawkeyes in their previous meeting in January, falling 86-77. Can Minnesota avenge their loss or will history repeat itself? We will soon find out.
