what to know

Minnesota has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will have to dust off their road jerseys soon. They and the Iowa Hawkeyes will square off in a Big Ten battle on Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena at 3:00 p.m. Iowa is favored, but since Minnesota couldn’t stop the odds in their last game, maybe the team has another upset up their sleeve.

Although Minnesota hasn’t fared well against the Spartans lately (they were 2-8 in their previous ten matchups), they didn’t let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Golden Gophers outrebounded the Spartans 59-56. For those watching at home, that’s the closest Minnesota has posted since January 4th.

Leading the charge was Cam Christie, who scored 19 points with six rebounds. Less helpful for Minnesota was Elijah Hawkins’ 0-5 three-point shooting.

Meanwhile, the point spread may have favored Iowa last Thursday, but the final result did not. They took an 89-79 hit in the losing column at the hands of the Nittany Lions. Oddsmakers set the bar high with a 163.5-point over/under, but they still managed to beat him.

Despite their loss, Iowa saw several players step up to the challenge and make significant plays. Owen Freeman, who scored nine points with five rebounds and two steals, was perhaps the best. Ben Crick was another key contributor, scoring 22 points with five rebounds.

The win for the Golden Gophers bumped their record to 15-7. As for the Hokies, their loss dropped their record to 13-10.

Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as both teams are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Minnesota has had no problem putting up the scoring this season, averaging 75.7 points per game. However, Iowa is not going to struggle in that department as they are averaging 84 points per game. With both teams able to rack up points so easily, the only question that remains is who can run the high score.

Minnesota came up short against the Hawkeyes in their previous matchup in January, falling 86-77. Can Minnesota avenge their loss or will history repeat itself? We will soon find out.
