Taking inspiration from Colin O’Sullivan’s novel, the Apple TV+ series revolves around Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan.

Her life is turned upside down when her family disappears in a crash. Her husband’s electronics company “compensates” her for the tragedy by giving her a home robot named Sunny.

Although she resents the robot at first, they eventually develop an unusual friendship as they pair up to uncover the mystery of what actually happened to her family. This journey will lead her to a dark world she never knew existed.

The official synopsis for “Sunny” reads, “The life of an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, is turned upside down when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious crash. As consolation, she received Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots made by from her husband’s electronics company.”
