Michigan State coach Tom Izzo can take a step closer to the exclusive 700-win club on Sunday when his team faces Maryland on CBS. Izzo has 698 career wins and could join the club next week after a win against the Terrapins this weekend.

The Spartans started the season ranked No. 4 in the nation due to the returning talent on the roster, but are now 11–7 overall and 3–4 in Big Ten play. Michigan State has made 36 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances under Izzo and unless the Spartans turn things around quickly, that streak is in jeopardy.

Michigan State began conference play with three losses in its first four games, but has since bounced back with consecutive wins over Rutgers and Minnesota.

Maryland’s overall and conference record is the same as Michigan State. The Terrapins recorded their biggest win of the season last weekend against previously ranked No. 10 Illinois, but lost the midweek game to Northwestern despite a 36-point outing from star guard Jahmir Young.

Michigan State vs. Maryland Predictions, Selections

Odds via SportsLine Consensus

This is essentially a must-match matchup for both teams if they want to get back on the path to the NCAA Tournament. Maryland has winnable conference games against Iowa, Nebraska, Michigan State and Rutgers. Michigan State, on the other hand, will have to face Wisconsin, Michigan, and Maryland again during the next two weeks. It seems hard to imagine the NCAA Tournament without Michigan State, but it could be a reality if the Spartans don’t turn it around quickly. These expectations will be further diminished if Maryland pulls an upset at home. Forecast: Maryland +1.5
