Super Bowl 2024: Andy Reid calls timeout, fails to challenge third-down spot in costly sequence for Chiefs

Andy Reid was one of the greatest coaches in NFL history, but the Kansas City Chiefs head coach also has flaws in his game that have been highlighted during his 25 years on the sidelines.

Travis Kelce caught a 9-yard pass on second-and-10 at the Chiefs’ 2-yard line, but Kelce was badly positioned at the conclusion of the catch — leading to a third-and-1 at the 10. Reed called timeout to set up a third-and-1 play, but did not challenge the spot.

Basically, Reed just decided to call timeout. No challenge attempt, then Pacheco was intercepted for no gain on third-and-1.

The Chiefs punted, but the possession would have been longer had Reid tried to challenge the spot. The fact that the Chiefs had just two field goals through eight Super Bowl possessions certainly wasn’t Reid’s best moment.

Kansas City is also 0 for 2 in the red zone with turnovers and short field goals. Points are hard to come by, and Reed called a timeout early in the third quarter of a one-score game.

It could haunt Kansas City.
