Super Bowl 2024: How to Watch Nickelodeon’s Broadcast Featuring SpongeBob SquarePants for Super Bowl 58

Super Bowl LVIII is a special one, as Paramount will offer a family-friendly broadcast of the NFL championship game for the first time. The popular Nickelodeon broadcast of NFL holiday games will head to Allegiant Stadium for Super Bowl 58 between the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs. The big game debuts today on CBS, Nickelodeon and more Paramount+.

In honor of its 25th anniversary, the cast of SpongeBob SquarePants will light up Nickelodeon’s coverage. SpongeBob (voiced by Tom Kenny) and Patrick Starr (voiced by Bill Fagerbeck) will join CBS Sports analyst Nate Burleson and play-by-play announcer Noah Eagle to call the game. Sandy Cheeks (voiced by Carolyn Lawrence) will join the group as a sideline reporter.

SpongeBob SquarePants has reigned as the most-watched animated series for 21 consecutive years, making this Super Bowl alternate broadcast one to watch. This isn’t the first foray into the broadcast spectrum for Fagerbekke, who had a viral moment when he made his broadcast debut at the 2022 Nikmas Game.

“He was reacting from all the endless minutiae and details,” Fagerbeck told CBS Sports, smiling as he relived the moment. “It was a great quote to let Russ cook a few years ago about Russell Wilson, so it got out. I was enjoying the Rams not being terrible (Fagerbeck is a Rams fan).

“We’re all about bikini bottom bubbles, Jeff,” Kenny added.

Kenny will join Fagerbeck in the broadcast booth for this, as SpongeBob joins the Nickelodeon family-friendly broadcast for the first time. SpongeBob himself could not contain his level of excitement for the opportunity.

“That’s cool! I’ve done motion capture stuff before, but never connected to the biggest live sporting event on Earth,” Kenny said. ‚ÄúThat would be the ball, we’d just be ad libbing in character.

“You just have to be SpongeBob, look around, see what’s going on and make dumb jokes about it in real time. That’s how I’ve spent my entire 61-year life, just looking around and cracking dub jokes about stuff. !

“What could go wrong? Don’t answer that!”

Will SpongeBob get his trademark laugh? This will be difficult to pull off with motion capture.

“I don’t know. You just brought up an interesting point that I just thought of,” Kenny said. “For me to laugh, I have to cheat with my hand (laughs). Does that mean SpongeBob’s hand goes to SpongeBob’s Adam’s apple? Does he have one?

“You can’t do that when we’re on the air,” Fagerbach added. “We won’t always be in the frame!”

“Since it’s motion capture, everything my body does — SpongeBob’s body does,” Kenny said. “I have to pick and choose my moments. I was feeling pretty good about this until you put all the confidence in me!”

As with a live sporting event, there is no rehearsal to cover a football game but preparation. SpongeBob and Patrick practiced motion capture, but the game itself would be played on CBS by Jim Nantz, Tony Romo and Tracy Wolfson.

“When you say rehearsed, that means we ‘heard,'” Kenny joked. “We didn’t pre-hear, listen or rehearse! Real-time stuff is what sportscasters always do. We’re just doing what they’re doing as a fool.”

What can spectators expect from the game? The game will be preceded by “Sweet Victory”, SpongeBob’s popular song played at the conclusion of “Band Geeks”, the most popular episode in the show’s 25-year history.

It’s also Kenny’s favorite episode.

“It kind of morphed into the Super Bowl,” Kenny said. “You’re not going to see Adam Levine’s six-pack this time! It’s not like I’m sitting around obsessively watching SpongeBob, but if I’m on a plane and I see a kid watching it. I’m kind of like, ‘Tee hee.’

“The band geeks are one.”

In addition to Kanye’s trademark SpongeBob laugh, Lawrence said he can’t wait to bring up the Travis Kelce-Taylor Swift relationship. “I know I have to say Taylor’s man is hotter than a hickory-smoked sausage!’ Lawrence laughed, referring to Sandy Cheek’s famous line.

SpongeBob SquarePants has had 277 episodes in 25 seasons since its debut on July 17, 1999. The show has captivated generations of fans and is one of the most valuable entertainment franchises in the world.

“Because of SpongeBob, I’ve been to places I never thought I could be: on Broadway, at a NASCAR race, waving the checkered flag at the Super Bowl. The memories keep coming,” Kenny said. “I’m very excited to make the Super Bowl, but I’m even more excited about when the game is over, everything is done, and we kick back and remember it — in a positive way!

“Every time a young adult says to me ‘Thank you for my childhood,’ my heart melts,” Fagerbach said. “It’s a strange thing to experience.”

No matter what happens on Super Bowl Sunday, SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy will have fun. The family-friendly telecast of NFL games in the 2020 season has been a hit since its inception, and for a reason.

“It was a revelation for me last year. This wonderful, gladiator, audience concept. They enjoy it!” Fagerbach said. “What fun they had and what fun they had.

“The whole CBS Sports crew, they’re so good and they’re so excited to do this. Why? Because it’s stupid. They get to play a different kind of football game.”
